HI, I'm Andy. I have worked in the animal care industry for a long time and I understand how challenging our work can be. We often turn up to the suffering and challenges of others, human and animal, and because we care so much about their welfare it can be hard to prioritise our own self care. This can be why so many in the animal care sector struggle with burnout, compassion fatigue, imposter syndrome, and can find it hard to sustain healthy self esteem and a positive value of self worth.
So, I have set up Your Safe Space as a coaching, mentoring, supervision and counselling service just for animal care professionals, that puts a focus on the professional’s emotional wellbeing and mindset, as well as looking at education and practical support. I support colleagues from varying sectors including Vets, Vet Nurses, Trainers, Behaviourists, Shelter worker and Groomers.
With a background in human therapy, holding current up to date Ofqual registered certificates in counselling, and my experience working at the highest level within the animal care community, I am well placed to offer a unique level of support to those who are seeking a safe space to build their confidence, improve their emotional wellbeing and create a healthy professional presence.
Your Safe Space is a discrete, confidential and private space that we create together.
No groups, no long term sign ups, just a safe space that you help to curate.

"Andrew Hale is simply one of the most empathetic souls I have ever met. Whether communicating with dogs or humans, his calm, kind, wise demeanour shines through and CAM would not be without him. Bringing the “human” aspect to caring for animals, he adds a whole new dimension to how CAM can support you"
Dr HANNAH CAPON MA VETMB MRCVS CCRP
As a professional working in the animal care sector, we seem to defy gravity everyday! Our work often brings many challenges, so it is important we prioritise self care and strive to work in an emotionally safe way. Creating a healthy professional presence is a big help in achieving this. Our professional presence should have a foundation in self confidence, and a sense of self worth that helps foster trust and respect among colleagues and clients. It’s about presenting ourselves in a way that reflects our values and competencies in an authentic way, whilst also protecting ourselves in the process, including having healthy boundaries. Like many things, it can take some work to get this right, and we can all benefit from ongoing support to ensure we keep working in a productive, enjoyable and safe way.
I have linked up with other wonderful professionals including ethically minded business coaches, marketing experts, web designers and clinical therapists and psychologists, so if we identify support that is beyond what I offer, I can signpost clients to the very best people in the different disciplines.
This is what Your Safe Space is all about - supporting you so you can support others !
Here is how I can help
CPD in Your Safe Space stands for Compassionate Professional Development – a unique opportunity for you to focus on creating that healthy professional presence. By working through these missions : Find your story, find yourself, find your purpose, find your structure and finally find your presence, I can help you create a healthy professional presence which you can feel confident taking out to the world. With a combination of counselling, mentoring and coaching, this programme has helped many professionals find, and value, their worth and supported a healthier way of working. This is open to all animals care professionals – so far I have helped Vets, Vet nurses, trainers, groomers and behaviourists.
This programme is delivered over sessions totalling 5 hours. To learn more about CPD and the five missions click here
Mentoring is for those who would like to spend time with me learning about working in dog behaviour. I support a lot of colleagues who want to work in a more dog centric way of working, especially in regard to aggression and reactivity cases, which are my speciality. I can also help with things such as public speaking, working with the public, engaging with clinical teams and best practice for consultations.
These sessions will be tailored to the individual depending on their needs and desired knowledge
One off, and ad hoc, sessions can be arranged for those who want to have a safe space to discuss a certain topic, off load or just need a space to feel heard and breath.
Also, I offer a 'Monthly Me' supervision style service for those that would like ongoing support, and are able to commit to monthly sessions. It can feel very lonely working in the animal care sector, and these monthly sessions offer a chance to offload, share, and discuss whatever would be helpful. This can include professional development, emotional health check ins, going over cases, discussing current challenges or just having a safe place to vent.
I offer an initial free, no obligation, zoom call to discuss your support needs.
I also offer discounts for colleagues in rescue and shelter work
£400
5 hours in total. Payment can be made up front, split in two or paid as you go

For one off sessions and ad-hoc support as and when needed

For those who want to commit to monthly support sessions. (Commitment for 3 months at a time- for those that pay 3 months in advance there is a cheaper rate). For those I have not already worked with, the first session is a longer 'get to know each other' session and that is £100
If you would like to create a bespoke mentoring package, prices can be discussed on arrangement.
“I would highly recommend Andy and Safe Space to anyone. I have literally spent thousands of dollars with business and life coaches previously, some good, some not so much. But something was missing, and that was me!
The chance to have a space to receive some understanding of my own needs, and to unravel some of the emotional baggage that has been holding me back. In fact I think some of the advice I have been given previously may have done more harm than good.
Just a couple of sessions in with Andy and I realised how much I was constantly trying to please, and indeed appease, others. Self compassion was a new concept to me, but Andy helped me understand it and embrace it.
With his help I have a better grasp of my purpose and a much healthier way of working. Thank you Andy!”
“Andrew’s gift is being able to hit really quickly the things that are the real challenges, and he gently and kindly supported me to understand so many things about myself.”
“Andrew didn’t try to give solutions or tell me what to do, but instead supported me to find my own way through the ‘treacle’ as I call it.”

I have 15 years of experience in the field of dog training and behaviour, and during that time I have established a thriving private practice business that has become the primary referral source for local veterinary practices. I understand the pressures of running a business, dealing with the public and interacting with other professionals. One of my significant achievements was the creation of the UK Dog Training and Behaviour Charter in the UK. This involved uniting leading progressive training and behaviour organisations to collaborate on regulatory matters and seek to enhance dog welfare. This gave me valuable insight into managing large projects and setting up recognised, industry wide bodies. I created the first emotional health support services for dog trainers, both for students at the online school, the ISCP, and for accredited trainers and behaviourists during my tenure as Chair at the Association of INTODogs. My educational work, through my highly successful and impactful Dog Centred Care platform, has contributed to reshaping the narratives surrounding dog training and behavior. Additionally, my partnership with Pet Remedy has helped elevate emotional well-being for animals, influencing both the general public and professionals across various disciplines. I am an expert advisor for Canine Arthritis Management and the British Isles Grooming Association (BIGA), and I use both positions to promote better emotional health for both animals and humans. I am also on the committee for BIGA and enjoy playing my role in helping steer the grooming profession. Finally, I have featured in mainstream and influential publications and spoken on many leading podcasts. I have also presented at leading behaviour conference around the world (in person and online), including the London Vet Show, ADCH, ABK, Head Vet Nurse Congress, BVNA and the Dog Behaviour Conference.
I have a degree in Human Psychology and ten years experience as a therapist prior to coming to working with animals. I have recently updated and refreshed my counselling education by completing Ofqual recognised certificates in counselling and currently working towards the NCFE CACHE Ofqual Level 4 qualification which will allow me to become a BACP registered counsellor.
All this experience means I am well placed to offer my clients insights and advice formed from these years of experience, working at the highest level and alongside leaders in the industry. I understand the trials of running a business, how to create a positive presence in the industry and how best to turn up to deliver the biggest influence possible, in a sustainable and emotionally healthy way.
I speak a lot about emotional safety for both professionals and caregivers, with Mike Shikashio on his 'Bitey End' podcast
“What a brilliant experience creating my safe space with Andrew. I knew some of my emotional needs were not being met but I didn’t realise how much this was affecting my work. I had nearly a year of various therapies a few years back, but Andrew managed to do more for me in just 6 sessions.
He has a wonderful ability to offer a truly safe space to open up and be vulnerable with a focus on supporting me as a professional. Andrew’s gift is being able hit really quickly the things that are the real challenges, and he gently and kindly supported me to understand so many things about myself.
I was very close to quitting this industry, but this time with Andrew has helped me find my purpose and helped me make peace with some of the things that had been holding me back.”
